CHENNAI: A woman made away with 37 sovereigns (296g) of gold jewellery worth around 7.6 lakh from a marriage hall in Puzhal on Tuesday.
Police said the woman, who security cameras caught stealing the gold jewellery from a room that had been occupied by the bridegroom’s brother and his wife, appeared to have entered the hall by posing as a relative.
“Deepak Raj and his wife Aruna reported the theft,” a police officer said. “They said they had left the jewellery in a suitcase in the room on the ground floor.”
The theft took place when Aruna and Deepak Raj went with the bride and bridegroom and all the guests to a temple 100m from the mantapam to perform the marriage rituals. “When Raj and his wife returned to the room after an hour they found the suitcase open and jewellery missing,” the officer said.
They lodged a case with the Puzhal police. Policemen went to the hall and questioned people before they discovered that security cameras had captured images of the thief.
