Villupuram MP demands Union health minister to make a statement on NMC's logo change

VILLUPURAM: Villupuram MP D Ravikumar moved a motion in the Lok Sabha to call the attention of the Union health and family welfare minister Mansukh L Mandaviya to make a statement in the house on the recent alteration in the National Medical Commission's (NMC) logo wherein the national emblem was replaced by an image of Dhanvantri, an avatar of Lord Vishnu recognized as the god of Ayurveda in the Puranas.


Ravikumar in a letter addressed to the Lok Sabha secretary general said the alteration 'is a cause for concern'. "This change is deemed unacceptable due to the conveyed message, which contradicts the scientific and secular principles integral to the commission's nature," said Ravikumar.

The MP said the substitution of a religious symbol for the national emblem raises questions about the commission's commitment to maintaining a neutral and inclusive stance.

"I strongly advocate for a reconsideration of this logo modification and request that the change be reverted. Preserving the NMC's commitment to scientific integrity and secular values is paramount for upholding public trust and fostering an environment of inclusivity within the medical community," he said.
