Chennai: After their batsmen had played their part piling up 590-2 declared, West Zone’s bowlers came to the fore to bowl out North East Zone for 235 in the first innings on Day 3 of their Duleep Trophy clash at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday.
Medium-pacer Chintan Gaja (4-38) and left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat (3-35) played major roles in West Zone taking a 355-run first innings. West Zone chose not to enforce the follow-on and were 12 for 1 at stumps. North East Zone, though, didn't go without a fight, thanks to Ankur Malik who top-scored with 81.
The first session was all about Unadkat and Gaja. Unadkat, in his third over of the innings, got rid of North East opener Kishan Lyngdoh (2) and No. 3 Al Bashid Muhammed off successive deliveries. While Kishan was clean-bowled, Bashid departed after being caught by keeper Het Patel.
Unadkat might have missed a hat-trick in that over, but he succeeded in giving West Zone a solid start. While Unadkat was bowling tidily at one end, he was well-supported by Gaja from the other. The duo did the initial damage that left North East Zone reeling at 20 for 4.
Once skipper Hokaito Zhimomi and Ashish Thapa (43, 4x4) offered resistance in the form of a 62-run stand for the 5th wicket, Atit Sheth (2-51) broke the stand by getting rid of Thapa.
