SALEM: Two police head constables were placed under suspension on Friday after an undertrial escaped from their custody in Salem in
Tamil Nadu.
S Kannan, 26, a resident of Iluppanatham near Thalaivasal, stabbed his grandfather Kaliannan and his relative Kala after a quarrel on November 8. The Veeraganur police registered a case and arrested him on the same day.
He was remanded in judicial custody and lodged in the Salem Central Prison.
Kannan started misbehaving with other prison inmates as he was mentally disturbed. Following this, Veeraganur head constables V Mohanasundaram, 49, and B Arul, 46, took Kannan to Salem Government Hospital for treatment on Wednesday. Doctors who checked him prescribed him medicines.
Arul went to a pharmacy to get medicines while the accused was sitting with Mohanasundaram on the hospital premises. A few minutes later, Kannan pushed Mohanasundaram down and ran away. Mohanasundaram tried to nab Kannan, but he fell on the ground and sustained minor injuries. The Shevapet outpost police registered a case and were on lookout for Kannan.
On Friday, the district superintendent of police P Rajan issued suspension orders to Mohanasundaram and Arul for negligence of duty.
