TVK opposes SIR, accuses DMK of using issue for political diversion
CHENNAI: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has opposed the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu, alleging that the move could undermine people’s democratic rights and accusing the DMK of using the issue for political diversion. The party pointed out that while Kerala had passed a resolution in its Assembly against the SIR, the DMK—despite claiming to oppose it—had failed to do so in Tamil Nadu.
TVK said the Election Commission’s decision to complete the revision within 30 days for 6.36 crore voters lacked clarity and could lead to selective deletions, as alleged in Bihar. It questioned how the second phase could begin when details of the first phase had not been explained, adding that the process created doubts similar to those raised in Assam during the implementation of the NRC.
The party urged the continuation of the existing voter roll procedure and made seven suggestions, including accepting Aadhaar as proof of identity and age, deleting fake and deceased names, and providing final lists in a digital, searchable format to political parties and the public.
