CHENNAI: The public works department (PWD) on Wednesday demolished three commercial buildings built on the Cooum river banks at Naduvankarai near Arumbakkam here.
The demolition drive was being carried out as part of the Cooum River Restoration Project.
“Three commercial structures were demolished today, but several more are remaining. There are 150 structures in the stretch opposite to the river bank in Naduvankarai,” said an official.
Most of the commercial building owners obtained an interim relief due to pending litigations, said officials involved in the project.
According to the PWD, there are nearly 600 commercial structures located on the Cooum river banks which are encroachments.
