CHENNAI: An 18-year-old college student died after hitting his head against an electric post while travelling on the footboard of an EMU train near St Thomas Mount on Friday.
Police said K Jayachandran, a computer science student at a college in Guindy, was travelling in an EMU train plying from Tambaram to Chennai Beach.
When the train was nearing Guindy railway station, Jayachandran, who was standing on the edge of the footboard, hit an electrical post, while the train was negotiating a curve. He fell on the ground from the impact. The passengers immediately informed the train’s crew and stopped the train.
Later, police took him to the government hospital in Chromepet where he was declared dead on arrival.
Police said the train was heavily crowded, forcing commuters to stand on the footboard.
