Teacher stabbed to death in staffroom in front of colleagues at Tamil Nadu school

NEW DELHI: A woman teacher was fatally stabbed at a government school in Mallipattinam, Thanjavur district, on Wednesday morning, sparking widespread outrage.
The attacker, a youth, repeatedly stabbed the teacher, identified as Ramani, in the staff room in full view of her colleagues before fleeing the scene. He was later detained by the police.
The attack, reportedly driven by personal reasons, took place at Mallipattanam Government Higher Secondary School, leaving the school's staff and students in shock. The teacher, who was rushed to the government hospital, was declared dead upon arrival.
Tamil Nadu School education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi swiftly condemned the brutal assault, stating, "Violence against teachers cannot be tolerated. Strict legal action will be taken against the attacker. We express our deepest condolences to the bereaved family, students, and fellow teachers of teacher Ramani."
Poyyamozhi described her death as a "huge loss" for the teaching community and confirmed that the suspect had been arrested. Chief minister M K Stalin has instructed the Minister to visit Thanjavur and offer condolences to the family. Additionally, the district collector has been directed to declare a holiday for the school and provide counselling to students.
In a show of solidarity, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami also condemned the murder, asserting that the incident highlighted the lack of safety and security for government teachers and doctors. "The DMK government has failed to maintain law and order. Murders and other crimes have become very common in Tamil Nadu," he said, urging the Chief Minister to address the state's security concerns.
