CHENNAI: Chief minister M K Stalin handed over financial assistance to ten needy Kalaimamani awardees and 500 folkart artists on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nadaga mandram in Chennai on Friday.
The Kalaimamani awardees were given ₹1 lakh each and the folkartists ₹10,000 each for purchase of costumes and instruments.
Tamil Nadu Sangeetha Nadaga mandram was started in the year 1955 to encourage the traditional art forms and renamed as Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nadaga mandram by late CM M Karunanidhi in 1973.
These art forms were encouraged by giving opportunities to the artists to perform on stage within and outside the country. Artists who had done long service to the propagation of a particular art form were bestowed with the title of Kalaimamani. Financial assistance was given to senior artists.
Minister for Tamil official language Thangam Thennarasu, among others were present.
