Some cheer, some frown as it pours in Chennai

The heavy rain that lashed the city for close to an hour and a half brought much needed respite from the sweltering heat on Thursday. But, it also flooded the streets and slowed traffic, delaying students and office-goers returning home.

CHENNAI: The heavy rain that lashed the city for close to an hour and a half brought much needed respite from the sweltering heat on Thursday. But, it also flooded the streets and slowed traffic, delaying students and office-goers returning home.
A similar spell of short but heavy rain is likely to occur on Friday, due to convective action caused by high temperature during the day time and also because of a change in the speed of westerlies and also due to the convective action.

In a forecast, the Met department said the sky condition was likely to be partly cloudy. "Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur in some areas."
On Thursday, the rain started around 3.30pm and continued till 5.30pm in different parts of the city. The southern and northern parts of the city received the maximum amount of rain. Tiruvallur region in the north, and Tambaram region in the south got heavy rain.
The rain recorded in different parts of the city: 52mm in Tiruvallur, 34mm in Meenambakkam, 32mm in Pallikaranai, 31mm in Tambaram, 24mm in Nandanam, 13mm in Nungambakkam.
Private weather bloggers said sea breeze too aided in the rain and that the city would get more in the coming days.
