CHENNAI: The first Rukmini Devi Animal Welfare Award will be awarded to Maneka Gandhi on January 30 at a function organised by the Rukmini Devi Arundale Trust and the C P Ramaswami Aiyar Foundation. The award, to be given away by eminent scientist Dr MS Swaminathan, consists of Rs 5,00,000 and a citation. Maneka Gandhi will also receive the lifetime achievement award from the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations.
Gen Kharb, chairman of the Animal Welfare Board of India, will also be honoured for his contribution to animal welfare.
