CHENNAI: A research scholar hailing from Chennai and currently employed in Illinois in the United States has gone missing under mysterious circumstances from the
Niagara Falls earlier this month.
Jayendran Palaniappan, a post-doctoral research associate at the University of Illinois who hails from Karnan Street in Rangarajapuram , disappeared after he went for a trip to the Niagara Falls along with wife Deepa Venkatraman and friends on May 11.
The New York police have confirmed to the family that an incident happened on May 11 and it was being treated as a ‘man missing’ complaint and said that they were unable to throw further light on the issue.
The ministry of external affairs office in Chennai has received a complaint in this regard from K Palaniappan, the father of Jayendran. When contacted by TOI, the father refused to comment on the issue. “I am in touch with the authorities and we do not want any media coverage on the issue. I do not want to speak to the press,” said sadi Palaniappan, the chartered accountant father of the missing man.
He said the police in the United States were following up the case and the issue was under investigation. Though there have been a number of deaths at the famous falls, there have also been a number of miraculous rescue operations .
Officials at the ministry of external affairs in New Delhi, who have a copy of the complaint of K Palaniappan, said the situation looked bleak since a fortnight has passed and the Indian national has not been found.
