, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee expressed its displeasure over the release.


“It was the Supreme Court which convicted the seven for the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi holding them guilty. The same court has released Perarivalan citing some legal points,” said Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president

K S Alagiri

in a statement on Wednesday.



“We don’t want to criticise the Supreme Court judgement. At the same time, we reiterate that the convicts are the killers and they are not innocent,’’ Alagiri said.

Alagiri called upon Congress cadre to hold a peaceful protest in their own localities for an hour from 11am on Thursday. “They shall cover their mouths with a white cloth and hold placards opposing violence and that murder is not solution for political differences,” he said.

Alagiri questioned those who sought the release of Rajiv case convicts on the grounds that they were Tamils. He asked if the same logic could be applied to other convicts imprisoned for more than 20 years. “Those prisoners are also Tamils. Are Rajiv assassins alone Tamils?” he asked.
