CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu assembly on Monday urged the Centre to take immediate steps to name the second domestic air terminal after the AIADMK founder and former chief minister late M G Ramachandran. An unanimous resolution was passed in this regard in the House.
Recalling her staying away from the inauguration of the two new terminals at Chennai airport, chief minister J
Jayalalithaa said she had sent a letter to Union civil aviation minister
Ajit Singh, requesting him to name the new building after MGR before it was inaugurated.
But, "there was no order in this regard from the Union government. This has pained me and the people of Tamil Nadu," she said.
Jayalithaa told the house that she had received a letter from civil aviation minister Ajit Singh saying that the Centre would consider the state's request to name the airport after MGR only after it is approved by the state assembly. The Chennai international airport was named after
DMK founder C N Annadurai and domestic terminal was named after late Congress leader K Kamaraj. Likewise, the new terminal should be named after MGR, she said.
