CHENNAI: South Indian Artistes’ Association (Nadigar Sangam) on Monday rejected actor
Ponvannan’s resignation as vice-president of the actors’ body.
A special executive committee meeting of the Nadigar Sangam rejected Ponvannan's resignation letter, which he submitted on December 4.
Earlier, Ponvannan told TOI that he would continue to be part of the administration.
Ponvannan said he is currently immersed in work related to ‘Natchathira Vizha,’ a one-day star event which will be conducted by the Nadigar Sangam in Bukit Jalil on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur in January in association with the Malaysian government.
“The resignation letter was a response to the fact that I was unable to respond to
Vishal’s decision to contest the R K Nagar bypoll,” he said.
Vishal, who is the general secretary of Nadigar Sangam, had declared that the decision to file nomination for the byelection was his own. (The EC rejected his nomination). Vishal is also the president of Tamil Film Producers Council.
Actor, director and producer Cheran and others, who are opposed to Vishal, welcomed the reports about the resignation on Monday.
Ponvannan said, “Let them (Cheran and others) celebrate the reports about my resignation. But I will continue to work with Vishal and the rest of the administration.”
The three-year term of the Nadigar Sangam officer-bearers will end in September 2018.
