MADURAI: The Madurai bench of the Madras high court on Wednesday directed the

Tuticorin

police to give permission to the DMK to hold a protest against a

Sterlite plant

.

Justice D Krishna Kumar gave this direction on a petition filed DMK's Tuticorin north district secretary and former minister Geetha Jeevan.

The petitioner’s counsel told the court that people were suffering from breathing and skin problems due to toxic emission from the Sterlite plant.
.
The DMK wanted to hold a protest near Chidambara Nagar Bus Stand on April 4 (7pm to 8.30pm today). The petitioner submitted a representation to the Tuticorin south police on March 31, seeking permission. But the police rejected it on April 2.

Following this, Geetha Jeevan moved the court.

The court said the protest should not cause any hindrance to traffic and damage to the roads. It also said there should not be any provoking speeches.
