Chennai: A court has handed life sentence to a woman and her boyfriend for murdering her husband in 2018 in a hide-and-seek game.
Vinothini alias Anitha, 26, from Nagalapuram in Thoothukudi district, had fallen in love with one Anthony Jagan, 24, from Guruvarpatti near Vilathikulam. As Vinothini and Jagan belonged to different communities, her family refused to accept their marriage proposal.
Her family members hurriedly arranged her marriage with software engineer
Kathiravan on September 12, 2018. The newly-married couple stayed at a rented house in Chennai. Vinothini began seeing her boyfriend, and even invited him to come to Chennai if he wished to continue their relationship.
Over time, Vinothini and Jagan devised a plot to kill Kathiravan. As per their plan, she took her husband to Thiruvanmiyur beach on October 12, 2018. There, she invited her husband to play a game of hide-and-seek, blindfolded, at the beach.
Her boyfriend Jagan, who was waiting for the opportunity, used a knife to kill Kathiravan. As soon as Kathiravan swooned on the beach, Vinothini asked Jagan to leave the place.
Later, Vinothini screamed for help and alleged that some robber snatched a gold chain from her before killing her husband.
On information, police personnel rescued Kathiravan and rushed him to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Thiruvanmiyur police registered a case. On examining CCTV feed of the beach, cops found out that Vinothini and her boyfriend had staged the
robbery drama. Police arrested them and registered a case under sections of murder and conspiracy.
The case came up for hearing in the first additional sessions court before Justice Thanga Mariappan.
Additional public prosecutor A Govindarajan appeared and examined the witnesses and filed documents including CCTV footage in the final report.
The trial judge sentenced Vinothini and Anthony Jagan to life imprisonment after finding them guilty in the
murder case. Soon after the verdict, the couple was taken from the court to Puzhal prison.
