CHENNAI: With chief justice of Madras high court Sanjay Vijayakukar Gangapurwala attaining superannuation on Thursday, the Centre has appointed senior judge Justice R Mahadevan as the acting chief justice until a new chief justice is appointed.

Justice R Mahadevan is to perform the duties of the office of the chief justice of the Madras high court with effect from Friday, according to a notification from the Union ministry of law and justice.

With a practice experience spanning over 25 years and specialising in civil, criminal, and writ cases with a focus on indirect taxes, customs and central excise matters, Justice Mahadevan has served as an additional government pleader for Tamil Nadu govt and held positions such as additional central govt standing counsel and senior panel counsel for the Centre at the Madras high court before his elevation as a judge in 2013.
