Intimate all accident claim awards within 48 hours, says Madras high court

CHENNAI: In the wake of reports of a court staffer swindling about Rs 1.5 crore motor accident compensation money, the Madras

high court

has laid down a 48-hour ultimatum for vehicle insurance companies and transport corporations to intimate deposit of the award amount. The victims shall be intimated about the deposit of the award amount within 48 hours.


An order to this effect was issued by a division bench of

Justice P N Prakash

and

Abdul Quddhose

in order to keep a check on illegal misappropriation of such compensation ordered to victims.

The order was passed on a suo motu proceeding initiated after it came to light that a subordinate court employee in

Pattukottai

swindled Rs 1.5 crore of compensation money awarded to road accident victims.

The court has subsequently ordered inspection of all records pertaining to motor accident cases in the state.

The matter has been adjourned to July 23.
