Chennai: Health and Family Welfare Minister K G Arunraj on Monday called for a global association of Tamil doctors on the lines of the World Tamil Sangam, saying he would seek Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s consent to organise an international meet for doctors from
Tamil Nadu practising around the world.
The minister was speaking at Madras Medical College’s (MMC) 190th Graduate Reception Day. An alumnus of the 1997 batch himself, Arunraj announced that MMC faculty would be sent abroad to learn new techniques as part of a proposed exchange programme. “Doctors from abroad can also come here and learn about tropical diseases,” he said.
There is a criticism that doctors lack ethics “he told the graduating students. “We accept the criticism. You need to be grounded and not compromise on ethics,” he said.
To encourage them in sports, a new indoor stadium would be built for MMC, he said, calling for the formation of university teams and encouraged students to compete in basketball and cricket.
He also inaugurated MMC’s first alumni website and mobile application, enrolling himself as a member on the spot, and urged alumni across the world to join the platform.
