GCC directs school maintenance ahead of reopening on June 4
Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has instructed officials to complete sanitation, maintenance and safety measures in all corporation schools before they reopen on June 4.
Corporation Commissioner G S Sameeran directed zonal officers and the school education department to ensure a safe, clean and learning-friendly environment for students returning after the summer vacation.
Officials have been asked to clean and maintain overhead and underground water tanks, repair water leakages, clean toilets and carry out drainage maintenance works. Schools have also been directed to inspect and service electrical equipment, including fans, switches, bells and generators, and replace faulty equipment wherever necessary.
The corporation has also ordered the removal of mosquito breeding sources, beehives and insect nests from school premises and directed officials to undertake pest-control measures.
Special attention has been given to the 38 central kitchens that prepare food under the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme. Officials have been instructed to clean storage rooms, cooking areas, drainage systems and drinking water facilities, and verify the safety and availability of LPG cylinders.
Self-help group workers engaged in the scheme have been asked to complete cleaning works by June 2. Officials have also been directed to remove expired or poor-quality food items and ensure breakfast is served to students from the first day of school reopening. The commissioner said arrangements have also been made to distribute textbooks and uniforms to students on the reopening day.
