CHENNAI: A prominent doctor died of his injuries late on Sunday, a week after a gang launched a murderous attack on him in full public view.
An armed gang had set upon 58-year-old consultant neurosurgeon S D Subbiah with cleavers and sickles as he was walking towards his car parked near Billroth Hospital in Raja Annamalai Puram at 5.30pm on September 14.
Police officers said the attack, which shocked the doctor’s colleagues and the medical fraternity, was the fallout of a land dispute.
While the doctor battled for life, police made little headway in the case, failing to apprehend the three people accused of masterminding the attack or the hitmen they had hired to kill the doctor.
A sub-inspector investigating the case was thrashed by a group of lawyers and illegally confined in the bar council at Madras high court when he attempted to contact a lawyer to question him about the attack on the doctor.
