Cyclone Michaung News Live Updates: Rajnath Singh to conduct aerial survey, meet CM Stalin on Thursday
Cyclone Michaung News Live: Residents grappled with stagnant water and power disruption in parts of Chennai and its suburbs on Wednesday, two days after Cyclone Michaung wreaked havoc in the metropolis and neighbouring districts, even as civic agency personnel stepped up relief and rehabilitation efforts. The government said power was kept suspended in some areas as a preventive measure since the power cables were under water, while asserting all efforts were being taken to restore normalcy. Another day's holiday was declared for schools and colleges in Chennai on December 7. The cyclone-triggered heavy rainfall had led to inundation in localities including Velachery and Tambaram. On Wednesday too, people were seen leaving their homes in the areas surrounded with water to safer zones, carrying their children and wading through the stagnant water. They called for help, including pressing more boats to ferry people to higher ground. Stay with TOI for all the latest updates:

It is a very sad state of affairs in Chennai because of heavy rains, it has flooded Chennai. The State Government and Municipal Corporation have done their work. There is a lot of inconvenience to the public...I have demanded in the Parliament that we should discuss in the Lok Sabha, the cyclone's effect in Chennai...The Government of India and the ministers must reply what action the Centre has taken to help the states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Cyclone Michaung landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam
Most low-lying areas in Tirupati and Nellore were flooded, and people were evacuated from the water-logged areas. Authorities have also declared a holiday for schools in many parts of the state. The wind, which was gaining in speed with each passing hour, uprooted trees and caused damage to standing crops in the south coastal districts.

Andhra Pradesh, with its long coastline of 974 kilometres, is more vulnerable to cyclones compared to other disasters like drought, storm surges, and floods. According to AP State Disaster Management Authority, about 3.3 million people reside within 5 km distance from the coastline. Thus, a storm surge with even a small wavelength from the sea level can affect lakhs of people living along the coast.

Cyclone Michaung News: Restriction on two-wheelers on ghat roads in Tirupati
In view of cyclone-induced downpour coupled with foggy climate, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has restricted plying of two-wheelers on ghat roads. The two-wheelers will be allowed only between 6am and 8pm till the weather conditions return to normalcy. TTD JEO Veerabrahmam inspected the ghat roads along with officials concerned on Monday evening and gave suggestions to the officials to arrange emergency measures for the convenience of devotees. TTD appealed to devotees to take note of restrictions and cooperate with the management.

Cyclone Michaung News: 12k fishermen shifted to camps in Krishna district
The Krishna district administration has geared up itself to face cyclone ‘Michaung’. The district officials evacuated around 11,876 people to relief camps from 63 fishermen villages. District collector Raja Babu monitored relief activities and the evacuation of fishermen from the villages. The collector inspected a few cyclone centers at Etimogga, Avanigadda and Edurumondi villages and interacted with the people taking shelter there.

Cyclone Michaung pummelled Chennai and its neighbouring districts non-stop, dumping 400 to 500mm of rain since Sunday morning, flooding homes and destroying cars and bikes across the coastal metropolis. In 2015, when the 'Chennai deluge' drowned the city, it had received 330mm of rain.

Flight and train services were hit in Chennai, with at least 30 flights cancelled and rescheduled. An airport official said the runway, taxiway and portions of the apron where planes stand were flooded and there was strong wind. With international flights suspended, passengers were stuck in other states.

The government is striving to bring normalcy at war-footing to other areas too like Tambaram and Avadi corporations, municipalities of Poonamallee and Mangadu. I have never seen rains of this intensity in my life. Generally, the city sees around 550mm rain in three months. But in the last two days, the city saw more than 500mm rain. If it doesn't rain any more, we hope to drain water from the city sooner and bring normalcy.
