Cyclone Burevi live updates: IMD issues heavy rain alert for four Kerala districts today

With the low-pressure area over Gulf of Mannar remaining stationary, the associated cyclonic circulation will continue to influence rainfall at isolated places over Kerala. Cyclone Burevi: Chidambaram Nataraja Temple inundated with rainwater

The Chidambaram Nataraja Temple in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu was inundated with rainwater after the temple town received 34mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, triggered by cyclone Burevi which weakened into a deep depression. More than one-fifth of the waterbodies in Cuddalore, Villupuram and Kallakurichi districts were brimming to its maximum capacity due to incessant rain in the last two days.

Cyclone Burevi: Chennai and many other parts of Tamil Nadu get heavy rain; spells to continue
Many parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai and delta districts, have received light to heavy rainfall as cyclone Burevi, which has weakened into a deep depression, has remained stationary near Ramanathapuram since Thursday night. More rain is expected over Chennai and neighbouring districts in the next six hours, the IMD has forecast. Army ready to step in
Senior officers from armed forces met state government officials and analysed the preparedness to step in for post-cyclone damages, a defence spokesperson said on Thursday. Pangode Military station is ready with 12 columns of soldiers with each column consisting 25 personnel. Aircraft and helicopters are stationed at Sulur Air Force station Coimbatore to face any exigencies. The Indian Coast Guard has deployed two ships and two boats. Southern air command headquarters and the Air Force station are also fully prepared.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappura. The Air Force and Navy have kept aircraft and rescue ships on standby. The Army and paramilitary forces are also ready for deployment for emergency services. As many as 2,891 relief camps have been opened to shift the people from high risk zones.

With the state being prepared to face cyclone Burevi, the residents of Chellanam coastal village are anxiously waiting with their fingers crossed. During the cyclone Ockhi in December 2017, Chellanam witnessed severe damage and sea erosion due to heavy winds, rain and sea-flooding. The broken seawall and lack of proper coastal protection measures have been causing frequent sea flooding in the area.

Families residing in vulnerable spots were shifted to relief camps across Kerala. In Thiruvananthapuram, the main evacuation was conducted at Ponmudi estate housing close to 140 families in layams. Several families were also shifted from the coastal areas.

Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan chaired a high-level meeting of Kerala State Disaster Management Authority officials to assess the situation. He said National Disaster Response Force teams had been deployed in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alappuzha and Idukki while defence forces were on alert for emergency services. Union home minister Amit Shah had called up the chief minister on Thursday morning and pledged all support to the state.

Holiday in south Kerala today
The state government has declared a holiday for government and PSU offices in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Idukki districts on Friday in view of the threat posed by Cyclone Burevi. However, it will not be applicable to banks and those deployed in election, Covid-19 duties and crisis management responsibilities.

The department had earlier said Burevi -- which crossed the Sri Lanka coast on Wednesday night -- will hit the Tamil Nadu coast as a cyclonic storm. However, the state will be on high alert as the depression is forecast to bring isolated heavy rainfall. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram are on yellow alert now.
