NAMAKKAL: A couple died by suicide by drinking poison-mixed cool drinks at their home in Tamil Nadu’s Namakkal town on Tuesday night.
The deceased have been identified as S Gunasekaran, 60, of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar and his wife G Chandrakala, 50.
Namakkal town police inspector K Kabilan said Gunasekaran and Chandrakala were involved in the running of a women's self-help group. The couple's elder son, who is a truck driver, had distanced himself from the family. The couple’s younger son is studying B Com in Trichy and lived in a hostel there.
The couple had borrowed money from various sources to fund the group but struggled to repay the loans. This along with issues with their sons could be the reason for the suicide, the inspector said.
The inspector said the couple interacted with neighbours on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday morning, they noticed that the couple hadn't come out of their home even after 8am. They peeped through a door gap and found the couple lying dead on a bed. They alerted the police.
The police broke open the door, recovered the bodies and sent them for postmortem.
The police have informed the elder sons. A case has been registered.
