Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin on Thursday announced compensation of 560 crore to six lakh farmers affected by natural disasters like drought, flood, cyclone and unseasonal rains under the crop insurance scheme during the last fiscal year.
The crop insurance scheme is implemented in 14 clusters comprising 37 districts by identified insurance companies.
“An area of 24.45 lakh acres were insured by 11.2 lakh farmers cultivating long-term samba crop during the last fiscal. The state government shared a premium subsidy of 1,375 crore, and the Centre shared 824 crore, and the farmers 120 crore,” an official release said.
The government recently issued an order releasing 181.4 crore as compensation to 1.87 lakh farmers as 3.52 lakh acres were affected by poor rainfall during the northeast monsoon in Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar and Thoothukudi districts.
