CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin on Thursday announced compensation of Rs 560 crore to six lakh farmers affected by natural disasters like drought, flood, cyclone and unseasonal rains under the crop insurance scheme during last fiscal.
The crop insurance scheme is implemented in 14 clusters comprising 37 districts by the identified insurance companies.

“An area of 24.45 lakh acres was insured by 11.2 lakh farmers cultivating long-term samba crop during last fiscal. The state government shared a premium subsidy of Rs 1,375 crore, and the Centre shared Rs 824 crore, and the farmers Rs 120 crore,” an official release said.
The government had recently issued an order releasing Rs 181.4 crore as compensation to 1.87 lakh farmers as 3.52 lakh acres were affected by poor rainfall during northeast monsoon in Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar and Thoothukudi districts.
