CHENNAI: Blending modern engineering with verdant nature, city realtor Ramky Wavoo Developers (RWD) is developing an eco-friendly weekend getaway for Chennaiites in Vedanthangal.
Situated in the vicinity of the Vedanthangal bird sanctuary (500 metres away as the crow flies), investors in RWD's getaway Ecopolis' can enjoy the company of 40,000 winged visitors such as cormorants, darters, herons, egrets and grey pelicans, or join ornithologists in watching snake birds dive into the water to gobble fish and fly to the banks to dry their feathers.
They can also watch spot-billed grey pelicans moving about in groups, lashing the water with powerful wing strokes, driving fish to shallow corners before swooping low for the final assault. These birds, regulated by their biological clocks, visit Vedanthangal from November to February.
"Our's is an eco-village of 400 plots, each measuring 25 cents and having organically grown orchards, muddy roads, a 4.5-acre club house inspired by Balinese architecture, terracotta floor tiles, gym, swimming pool, suites, restaurant, party hall, watch tower, solar-powered street lights and a play area," said W S Habib, MD, RWD. Each plot will cost Rs 11.5 lakh. He added that the group would invest Rs 50 crore in the project and planned to promote Vedanthangal as a tourist destination.
Tourism secretary V Irai Anbu, told TOI, "The state government has been encouraging private players in the tourism sector. We will be only happy to work with RWD in promoting the Vedanthangal bird sanctuary."
