Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain, IMD says

districts are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain in the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday morning.

Area cyclone warning centre director S Balachandran said, "Yesterday's low pressure area over Sri Lanka and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal now lies over southwest Bay of Bengal off the coasts of Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu. Rainfall activity will continue over north coastal Tamil Nadu with heavy to very heavy rain over Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts during next 24 hours."

Weather blogger Pradeep John said the low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal would bring more rain in the coming days.

In the last 24 hours, Chennai recorded around 20cm rainfall, inundating roads and streets across the city. Some of the waterlogged roads include 100 Feet Road (near Olympia Tech Park), OMR, Velachery-Saidapet Road, Vivekananda College Road and Sterling Road.

Duraisamy subway in T Nagar was filled with water. The Nelson Manickam road subway was closed following waterlogging.

Water entered several homes and shops in low-lying areas. There were power cuts in several places in the city, including Mandaveli and Royapettah. Tangedco said power had to be disconnected in some areas as rainwater had entered homes.
