CHENNAI: Almost a week after two vessels collided off the
Ennore
port near Chennai leading to an
oil
spill, police on Friday registered a case against captains of two
ships
and the respective
shipping companies
.
The BW Maple, an LPG tanker, rammed the petroleum tanker Dawn Kanchipuram two nautical miles off the Kamarajar Port at Ennore at 4am on Saturday. The collision snapped a fuel pipeline on the oil tanker, leading to an oil spill. The oil slick travelled more than a 30km in the next few days even as Indian Coast Guard personnel were trying to remove the oil sludge accumulated on the Ennore shore.
On Friday, based on a complaint filed by Ennore Shipping Corporation general manager, the Minjur police registered a case under sections 280 (rash navigation of vessel), 285 (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter), 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees), 431 (mischief by injury to public road, bridge, river or channel) of the India Penal Code.
The police will question the crew members of the ships to find out how the accident happened and would take further action.
Meanwhile, the director general of shipping on Friday ordered a probe into the oil spill.
