Chennai, eight other TN coastal districts to get heavy rainfall

The Indian Meteorological Department on Monday forecast heavy or very heavy rainfall in Chennai and eight other coastal districts over the next 24 hours. Most parts of the state and Puducherry are likely to get at least moderate rainfall.

CHENNAI: The Indian Meteorological Department on Monday forecast heavy or very heavy rainfall in Chennai and eight other coastal districts over the next 24 hours. Most parts of the state and Puducherry are likely to get at least moderate rainfall.

Weathermen said the city and the rest of the state would continue to get rainfall for the next five days (till Friday).

An upper air cyclonic circulation centred over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the Sri Lanka coast would cause rainfall in the state, said area cyclone warning centre director S Balachandran.
Coastal districts that will get heavy to very heavy rainfall include Chennai, Cuddalore, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Ramanathapuram. A few interior districts are also likely to get heavy to very heavy rain over the next 24 hours.
The northeast monsoon arrived over Tamil Nadu on October 27. Weather blogger Pradeep John has forecast above normal rainfall this northeast monsoon due to a favourable Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO). Rainfall in the state would last until December first week, he said.
