CHENNAI: A special court for narcotics cases in Chennai has sentenced a 70-year-old man to five years’ rigorous imprisonment for smuggling 1.15 kg of ganja in 2016. The court imposed a total fine of Rs 50,000 on the man, identified as A Bakrutheen.

On March 18, 2016, the Ice House police received a tip-off about a man smuggling drugs near T H Road Arch. They intercepted Bakrutheen, a resident of Chennai, and seized 1.15 kg of ganja from him.

He was charged under sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. A chargesheet was filed on February 13, 2019.

Principal special judge of EC and NDPS court C Thirumagal pronounced the verdict on February 21.

Special public prosecutor K J Saravanan argued the case.
