Chennai Corporation parks to open on Tuesday

CHENNAI: Parks managed by the Greater Chennai Corporation would open for the public on Tuesday morning, said GCC commissioner J Kumaragurubaran on Monday. The parks were closed on Friday to avoid accidents due to Cyclone Fengal.

The GCC has cleared at least 300 tonne of garden waste in the last two days from the parks.

"All the 871 parks will open. We cleared almost all the trees and removed waterlogging too," the commissioner said.

The corporation collected 3,942 metric tonne of waste on Sunday and 3,680 tonne on Monday. The highest of 631 tonne was collected from Royapuram zone, followed by 481 tonne in Tondiarpet zone and 401 in Teynampet zone.

Several parks, including the Anna Park in Royapuram and Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore, were affected by inundation and tree fall. Play equipment in KP Park was damaged due to heavy rain. Officials said estimates would be prepared to fix them.

GCC operated more than 200 tree cutters and park staff to cut the trees. Some also fell on interior roads, blocking traffic.

Meanwhile, the GCC held 192 medical camps which benefited 10,226 people.
