The right leg of a 50-year-old man, working as a watchman at an apartment complex in RA Puram here, was amputated after an SUV (sports utility vehicle) hit him at the Kaliappa Hospital signal on Thursday night.

CHENNAI: The right leg of a 50-year-old man, working as a watchman at an apartment complex in RA Puram here, was amputated after an SUV (sport utility vehicle) hit him at the Kaliappa Hospital signal on Thursday night.
According to residents of Satyam Apartment where Kothandam works as a watchman, he was trying to cross the road when the SUV hit him.

The SUV, bearing the number plate TN 45 AJ 5555, was travelling at a high speed. The impact was so strong that the road median was badly damaged.
Kothandam was rushed to the Stanley Medical College. His right foot was amputated late on Thursday night.
According to residents, Kothandam was an intelligent man who read a lot and chanted prayers throughout the night to stay up while performing his duties as a watchman.
The Adyar traffic investigation wing registered a case. However, police declined to mention the details.
