Active Covid cases close to 1 lakh in Tamil Nadu, half in Chennai region

The state added 13,776 new Covid-19 cases pushing the active cases close to nearly 1 lakh on Friday, when public health authorities added 78 deaths and discharged 8,078 people. There were 95,048 people seeking treatment for the viral infection, as the case tally touched 10.51 lakh (10,51,487) and cumulative death toll touched 13,395.

CHENNAI: The state added 13,776 new Covid-19 cases pushing the active cases close to nearly 1 lakh on Friday, when public health authorities added 78 deaths and discharged 8,078 people. There were 95,048 people seeking treatment for the viral infection, as the case tally touched 10.51 lakh (10,51,487) and cumulative death toll touched 13,395.
Hotspot Chennai reported 3,842 cases and 37 deaths on Friday, when 30 other districts in the state reported a three-digit increase. Deaths were reported from 18 districts. Chengalpet reported ten deaths, Kancheepuram, Kanyakumari and Tiruvallur reported four each, six other districts reported two deaths each and seven others one death each.
After Chennai, Chengalpet reported 985 cases. Along with Tiruvallur (807) and Kancheepuram (395), the Chennai region reported 6,029 new cases and 55 deaths. Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram reported four deaths each. The zone had 45,922 (48%) of active cases. The other districts in the north together reported 1,290 new cases and six deaths.
With 889 new cases, Coimbatore reported the third highest number of fresh cases in the state. Together, the eight districts in the west reported 2,733 cases and five deaths. In the south, Tirunelveli reported 517 new cases followed by 502 in Madurai. Together, the 10 districts in the south added 2,508 new cases and nine deaths. The central region added 1,216 cases and 3 deaths. Perambalur reported 10 cases – lowest in the state.
At least 23 districts in the state had more than 1,000 active cases in the state. Chengalpet had 8,186 active cases.
