HENNAI:
Southern Railway’s Chennai division will upgrade four major goods sheds at Singaperumal Koil, Tada, Katpadi and Korukkupet as part of its 2025-26 infrastructure modernisation plan aimed at strengthening freight movement and improving cargo handling efficiency across the region.
Railway officials said the projects are intended to support industrial growth, improve supply chain movement and enhance freight operations by upgrading loading, storage and transport infrastructure at key freight terminals.
Infrastructure works are already under way at the Singaperumal Koil and Tada goods sheds to support increasing automobile freight traffic. The projects include improvements to approach roads, circulation areas and loading and storage facilities to ease cargo movement.
Among the projects, the redevelopment of the Korukkupet goods shed is the largest, with works estimated at Rs 81.43 crore. The project includes laying new railway lines, developing truck parking facilities, cement concrete flooring, drainage systems, boundary walls and improved road access.
The Katpadi goods shed will also be modernised to improve handling of commodities such as cement, fertilisers and foodgrains, officials said.
