Cyclone Michaung News Live Updates: Heavy rain lashes parts of Chennai; people asked not to visit parks and beaches
Due to heavy rains, holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpet districts of Tamil Nadu on Monday. Cyclone Michaung that is brewing over the Bay of Bengal is expected to skip Chennai and make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam with winds that could reach speeds of 100kmph on Monday morning, IMD has forecast. Chennai and its neighbouring districts may, however, get heavy rain when the cyclone nears the Tamil Nadu coast. The IMD has issued a red alert for Tiruvallur district for Monday, saying it may receive extremely heavy rainfall of 21cm or more in 24hours at one or two places. S Balachandran, IMD deputy director general, said the system may intensify into a deep depression on December 2 and into a cyclonic storm the next day.
