CHANDIGARH: For all those music lovers, it is that time of the year to pack your drums and guitars and throng the streets to showcase your talent. Doesn't matter whether you are an amateur or a trained professional singer or musician, the World Music Day celebration at the open stage of Alliance Francaise, Sector 36, on Saturday, would provide a perfect platform to people from all walks of society to fulfill their innate desires of composing songs, playing their musical snippets to the audience and performing on their favorite chartbusters.
Celebrated on June 21 every year in more than 100 countries, the festival encourages amateurs and professional musicians to perform on street.
"Every year, we celebrate World Music Day with great zeal. We organize open stage performances in the evening for music lovers who come up with new, innovative ideas ranging from playing their self-composed songs to translating a Bollywood chartbuster into French. This year, we have received 42 registrations, compared to the 25 that we received last year," said Laure Guyot, cultural coordinator of Alliance Francaise.
Inaugurating new trends in the domain of music is Puneet Sachdeva, a banker by profession who left his government job for the love of French language. He playfully transfuses two distinct cultures to accord a new meaning to music. "I believe the best way to learn a language is to live it. Hence, this World Music Day, I translated the song "Tum hi ho" into French," said Puneet.
Kirti Mahajan, of Sector 20, is another talented artist who has penned down a beautiful French song titled "Avec ta moustache" (meaning "With your moustache") on the occasion. She would present a stage performance on the song at Alliance Francaise. In addition to solo performances, group participations, too, are gaining momentum. Rohit Verma and Anant Kumar, of Sector 25, have chosen the song "Yaaron Dosti" to enthrall the audience with their scintillating performance in Alliance Francaise.
