CHANDIGARH: The gap in the demand and supply of water in the city was recorded around 15-20 million gallons per day (MGD) during summer. Even then, the authorities were unable to curb water wastage and they preferred to complete only the formalities. Notices served on defaulters had little effect on them as they still continue to wash vehicles and water lawns.
While the authorities claimed to have kept a strict vigil over violations on a regular basis, residents had a different tale to tell. ''Every morning, I see people washing their vehicles with tap water. This is an everyday affair,'' said Sudhanshu Khurana of Sector 28.
While the violations are common in every locality, the number of notices issued has brought to light the care-free attitude of the authorities. Anil Bansal, XEN of MC, said, ''There are 40-45 violations per day.''
Superintending engineer of public health department R K Goel said, ''Our team of 14 officials is keeping a check on violators on a day-to-day basis. We are issuing notices to them and we are challaning repeat offenders.''
