CHANDIGARH: The UT administration has sent a fresh proposal to the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) for expansion of local police. The latest figures have been arrived at after a study conducted by Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD), which has cleared the demand of UT police for an additional manpower of 2,470 personnel to the present 3,800-strong force.
With security being given vital importance across the country in view of worsening law and order situation, UT is hopeful of getting the MHA green signal. The proposal also holds promise of getting materialized in view of the recent sanction of 1,100-strong IRB battalion by the MHA. We believe our demands will be met, UT IG SK Jain told TOI.
The last two proposals of UT police were rejected by the ministry. UT has asked MHA to increase the sanctioned strength in district police force, including more sub-division police officers (SDPO) and more cops in police stations. The administration has proposed four SDPOs and 1,611 personnel at police stations. Moreover, UT police wants four new posts for IPS officers in the city police, who could be posted as SPs. At present, the force has five posts for IPS officers, of which one each is blocked for officers from Punjab and Haryana cadre. Moreover, to the present sanctioned strength of 11 DSPs, the UT has now recommended sanction for 10 more posts.
Also on the wishlist is a new police training centre, which would be headed by one SP and two DSPs. Along with them, it would have a strength of 133 personnel devoted to train cops. Moreover, UT cops have also asked for sanction of the already operational Economic Offences Wing (EOW), Women and Child Support Unit and its traffic wing. Also, UT wants to have a General Railway Police station of the force. At present, Haryana unit mans the same.
Meanwhile, UT has asked for four phases in the recruitment of the proposed strength. If the go-ahead comes through, recruitment process would end in financial year 2012-13. UT police had proposed recruitment of 809 personnel in the financial year, followed by 805 more in 2010-11, and 496 and 360 in subsequent fiscals. We do not have the recruitment infrastructure and so want time to build the force, the IG stated.
