University student thrashed for protesting against rash driving

CHANDIGARH: Tension prevails when a 21-year old student of MA-1 Politics and member of Students For Society (

, was thrashed with a

hockey

stick when he reportedly opposed the rash and negligent driving by a student of law department at the small roundabout near the market of PU on Friday.

Jashandeep received severe head injuries and rushed to GMSH-16. He received about half a dozen stitches and his condition stated to be stable. Police have rounded up a first year student of Law department, Ranwant Singh, who is also a hockey player, and impounded his car. The incident took place around 2pm. Several members of SFS rushed on the spot and maintained that it is yet to ascertain that either a student politics was the reason behind the attack or something else.

Injured Jashandeep maintained, “I along with my friend, Sukhwinder Singh, was returning from Hostel number-5 when a speeding and negligent driven Volkswagen bearing VIP registration number crossed from nearby them. I told the driver of car to drive it on low speed inside the campus but the youth on driving seat started hurling abuses on me. I retaliated and in the mean time, youth pulled out a hockey from the car and attacked me.”

The eyewitness Sukhwinder Singh said that the front portion of hockey stick was covered with metal and it hit hard on the head of Jashandeep. Meanwhile, the assailant, Ranwant Singh, along with his car was rounded up on the spot and later handed over to local police. (SOI) rushed on the spot and started claiming that the assailant has nothing to do with their student union.”

Inspector Narinder Patial, SHO of PS 11, said, “The law student, Ranwant, is not attached with any student union. He was driving his car on some speed, which was opposed by the SFS members. The statement of injured is being recorded. The matter is being investigated.” Police have started the investigation.
