Two policemen shot dead inside a police post in Punjab's Gurdaspur
GURDASPUR: In what can only be described as an audacious strike on their own turf, two policemen were shot dead by unidentified assailants inside a police post in Adhian village, barely a kilometre from the international border with Pakistan in Gurdaspur district.
The killings have emerged as one of the most disturbing and concerning incidents for the Punjab Police—particularly the Gurdaspur police—in the recent past, raising alarming questions about security preparedness in a sensitive border belt.
According to police, the attackers entered the police post during the Saturday night and fired multiple rounds, killing Assistant Sub-Inspector Gurnam Singh and Home Guard jawan Ashok Kumar leaving the two policemen with no chance to respond on the spot.
Senior police officers rushed to the scene as the news broke early Thursday morning.
SSP Gurdaspur, Aditya, said unidentified persons had executed the attack. “We are probing all angles ” he said, adding that the bodies have been sent for post-mortem to the Civil Hospital, Gurdaspur.
Sources informed that six rounds were fired.
Shockingly, the police came to know about the killings only after Banarasi Das, SHO Dorangala, under whose jurisdiction the village falls, repeatedly failed to reach the policemen on the phone and eventually called Kamaljit Singh, the sarpanch of Adhian village, to check on the situation.
Kamaljit described what he witnessed upon reaching the police post around 8 a.m. “The ASI was ‘sitting’ upright on a chair with both hands in his pockets, and the Home Guard jawan was ‘lying’ under a quilt on the cot. At first glance, nothing looked unusual. But a closer look told a completely different story,” he said adding that he immediately informed the SHO, who rushed to the spot with his team.
The sarpanch also revealed that although CCTV cameras had been installed on the road leading to the police post, they had been non-functional for quite some time.
He expressed apprehension that the killings could be the handiwork of gangsters or elements from across the border, given the sensitivity of the region and the proximity to Pakistan.
Police have sealed the entire area and launched an intensive investigation. Forensic teams are examining the site, and multiple units are scanning all angles—from gangsters action to possible terror or cross-border involvement.
Reacting to the incident, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring uploaded his comments on X saying "It's a matter of grave concern that our 2 policemen were found shot dead near a check pody in Adhian village “. He urged both the state and central government to investigate the killings thoroughly, identify the culprits and punish them adding “We all have to face the situation together and we can’t afford to be partisan or divided on the matter of security of our people, state and country”.
