LUDHIANA: The police here reportedly raided the stronghold of Shiv Sena leader Jagdish Tangri after 2 am on Sunday and arrested eight of his men. A trip to Tangri’s house proved futile as he is learnt to be in hiding.
It is learnt that three of the eight men, including SP Tangri, nephew of the Sena leader, were released. A Congress politician reportedly came to his rescue.
However, Jagdish Tangri and his son could not be arrested. The SHO, CIA, Mukhwinder Singh said three of the arrested men were produced in the court of Preetam Arora later in the evening. A case has been filed in the police station at division number 3, though the CIA staff conducted the raid and handled the case.
Tangri had made Gur Mandi his fief in the last eight years. The controversial man was also reported to have supplied men for riots in Gujarat.
The police apparently booked his men under sections 302 IPC (murder) and 148 (rioting) for this reason. The Ludhiana SSP said the three men, Saidaas of Ludhiana’s Passian area, Harvinder Pal Singh from Subhani Building and Yadvinder from Jagraon, were arrested on these charges. Tangri’s fortunes had been on the decline since the previous SAD-BJP government, which reportedly supported him, was ousted.
