Sukhu launches offensive against ‘chitta’, urges citizens to join fight
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh chief minister Sukhvinder Sukhu on Tuesday issued a stern warning to those involved in drugs, urging them to "reform themselves or face the consequences", as the state govt intensified its battle against ‘chitta' (heroin) that threatens the future of the youth.
Speaking at the third consecutive anti-chitta awareness walkathon in Hamirpur, Sukhu called on the people to join hands with the authorities in creating a drug-free society. The chief minister had previously led similar walkathons in Shimla on November 15 and in Dharamshala on December 1.
The walkathon began at Government Senior Secondary School (Boys), Hamirpur, and concluded at the Police Lines, Dosadka Ground. It saw participation from students, public representatives, govt officials, and local citizens. Prior to the start of the event, Sukhu administered an oath to those present, with participants pledging their collective commitment to eradicate ‘chitta' and other narcotics from the state.
Addressing the gathering, the chief minister emphasised that Himachal Pradesh was waging a decisive battle against the drug. "Strict and decisive action is underway to uproot the ‘chitta termite' from its roots through unyielding force of the law," he said.
Highlighting key achievements of the campaign, Sukhu noted that on November 22, the police conducted raids at 121 locations, striking at top trafficking networks. Three days later, checks were carried out at 51 educational institutions and around 598 shops, markets, and college surroundings, resulting in 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and 385 challans were issued. On December 7, a total of 16 major traffickers were detained under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic (PIT) in the NDPS Act. So far, 63 traffickers have been arrested, 1,214 suspects identified, and 950 illegal properties earmarked for action. Assets worth over Rs 50 crore were seized, a significant rise from Rs 13 crore during the previous govt's tenure.
Sukhu also announced the establishment of new de-addiction centres across the state and the formation of a dedicated drug de-addiction, prevention, and rehabilitation board to coordinate treatment, prevention, and community outreach efforts. The event was attended by technical education minister Rajesh Dharmani, MLAs, Congress leaders, and govt officials.
