Sirsa has become the first district in the country to have the entire district running 100% on CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lamps) instead of incandescent bulbs.
CHANDIGARH: Sirsa has become the first district in the country to have the entire district running 100% on CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lamps) instead of incandescent bulbs. It all started from Kalanwali village, which has a population of 2,000. After this, villagers of Ellanabad and Rania joined the campaign, though at the behest of the administration, but now all the villages and towns are dependent on CFLs.
Baljeet Singh, a resident of Sirsa city, said: ''We got our power system replaced last year. But now I think the whole district is lit up by CFL.'' Even though the administration's claim of 100% CFL electrification looks on the higher side, the reality is not far from it- At least 95% of the people in the district would be dependent on CFL.'' Sources in the electricity department said the new power system would help in saving as much as 40% on electricity after replacement of incandescent bulbs. Total switchover to CFLs would mean saving of as much as Rs 9 crore and 60 MW of power every month in this district while in the entire state, roughly Rs 180 crore would be saved each month as and when it is implemented. Sources said that in all, over eight lakh CFLs are in use in 1.75 lakh households in Sirsa.
Executive engineer DS Malhan said: ''It has been a successful mission and and we have achieved the target much before we thought we would.'' However, about 30,000 tubewell owners have not been taken in the campaign's fold. After the success of CFL in Sirsa, Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam is looking at exploring the possibility of replacing the lighting system in the entire state with CFL because of its cost-effectiveness and later on in the entire state. Officials say it would be a difficult thing to do since those living in urban areas are averse to the idea.
