Amritsar:
Shiromani Akali Dal (Reorganised) has announced to launch an agitation for the elections of Shiomani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).
The decision was announced here on Saturday after a meeting of SAD (Reorganised) held in Amritsar under the leadership of former Jathedar of Akal Takht-turned president of the party Giani Harpreet Singh. The meeting was attended by the core committee, working committee and all district presidents of SAD (Reorganised).
Later, talking to mediapersons, Harpreet Singh said that a major agitation would soon be launched to compel the govt to conduct the long-pending elections of SGPC. Stating that the delay in holding these elections should be seen as govt interference in Sikh affairs, he alleged that by not conducting elections for such a long time, the control of one faction is being deliberately maintained.
During the joint meeting, a resolution was also passed condemning Sukhbir Singh Badal's statement terming the Dec 2 Hukamnamas as a conspiracy. He further informed that it was also decided in the meeting that all SGPC members associated with SAD (Reorganised) would submit a complaint to the officiating Jathedar of Akal Takht against Sukhbir Singh Badal, seeking strict action as per Sikh traditions for describing the decisions of the five Sikh high priests as conspiratorial, adding that their aim is to ensure that no one in the future questions decisions taken in accordance with Sikh maryada (Sikh code of religious conduct).
He said that the participants also termed the silence of SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami on the issue as part of an alleged conspiracy and demanded that the govt provide immediate compensation to farmers for losses caused by heavy rains and hailstorms.
Among those present at the meeting were Gurpartap Singh Wadala, Bibi Jagir Kaur, Gobind Singh Longowal, Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Sucha Singh Chhotepur, Surjit Singh Rakhra and Iqbal Singh Jhunda.
