Ropar reviews plans for ‘green’ and plastic-free Hola Mohalla 2026

Patiala: Ropar deputy commissioner Aditya Dachalwal on Friday chaired a meeting in Sri Anandpur Sahib with Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) chairperson Reena Gupta to review arrangements for celebrating Hola Mohalla 2026 in an environmentally sustainable and plastic-free manner under the theme "Green Hola Mohalla".The DC said Hola Mohalla celebrations will be marked from Feb 27 to March 1 at Kiratpur Sahib and from March 2 to 4 at Sri Anandpur Sahib. He said the district administration was committed to making the entire event environmentally responsible and hygienic.
Highlighting key initiatives, he announced that single-use plastic will be completely banned during the festival. He said disposable utensils made from agricultural crop residue such as maize and sugarcane waste will be distributed to langar committees, and over 10 lakh compostable plates, glasses, and spoons will be provided to ensure smooth and hygienic langar services while enabling easy composting and scientific disposal of waste.He said the use of crop-based compostable utensils will prevent plastic pollution and promote sustainable waste management practices. "Our goal is to celebrate Hola Mohalla in a truly green manner and leave a positive environmental impact for future generations," he said.The DC appealed to Sant Mahapurush, social organisations, shopkeepers, hotel owners, langar committees and devotees to cooperate with the administration.Reena Gupta assured full support from the PPCB. She said special awareness drives would be conducted in mela areas to discourage the use of single-use plastic in langars, shops, hotels and restaurants. She said dedicated teams will ensure proper segregation and scientific disposal of waste, and special waste collection points will be established throughout the mela area.MSID:: 128613159 413 |
