Retired Subedar duped of Rs 15.16L in insurance scam
Hisar: A 69-year-old retired Subedar from the Hisar Military Cantonment area was allegedly duped of Rs 15.16 lakh by cyber fraudsters, who promised to refund the balance of his insurance policy along with interest. The Cyber Police Station have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the matter.According to the FIR, Karan Singh had purchased a life insurance policy worth Rs 8 lakh from an insurance company in 2010, which matured in 2020.
He allegedly received a lower payout than expected. On Sept 22, 2025, a woman identifying herself as Seema contacted him, claiming that the remaining amount of his policy was still lying with the company and could be released. Subsequently, a man named Rajiv Sharma, posing as a company agent, informed him that the total payable amount, including interest, was Rs 13.28 lakh. However, he was told that certain fees had to be paid first to process the claim. Believing the claims, Karan Singh transferred money in multiple instalments to different bank accounts under various pretexts. The payments included Rs 17,928 on Oct 17, 2025, as a registration fee; Rs 44,980 on Oct 31 for code generation; and Rs 87,884 on Nov 7 as release charges. In total, Rs 15,16,338 was allegedly transferred under the heads of "audit charges, govt fees, additional benefits, and other processing costs."The complainant reportedly arranged the money from his personal savings and borrowings from neighbours. Despite repeated payments, neither the promised policy amount nor the deposited money was returned. Instead, the accused allegedly demanded an additional Rs 5 lakh. The fraud came to light when the victim informed his younger son, who suspected cybercrime and lodged a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Portal. After preliminary verification, police registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. MSID:: 128643280 413 |
