MOHALI: The mayor’s race has begun in the Congress with the state government issuing notification for the election.
First-time councillor Amarjit Singh Sidhu, the younger brother of cabinet minister and MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu, and fourth-time councillor Raj Rani Jain, the wife of former senior deputy mayor Rishab Jain, who himself is a three-time councillor, are the frontrunners.

Source said former senior deputy mayor Rishab Jain and councillor Amrik Singh Somal, who defeated former mayor Kulwant Singh, too are in the race.
Congress has an absolute majority in the MC house, with 37 of the 50 councillors. MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu said, “The final decision will be made by the chief minister. We will abide by the decision of the party high command. We will consider experience while selecting the mayor.”
