Punjab man shot dead in Canada: How passenger pickup from motel ended in fatal shooting

BATHINDA: A 30-year-old Punjabi cab driver was shot dead in North Battleford in what police have described as a homicide. The victim, Devinder Singh, had gone to pick up a woman passenger from a motel on Friday when a man following the woman opened fire, according to his family in Punjab.

Devinder Singh, a native of Daulatpura Neewan in Moga district, had moved to Canada nearly four years ago to join his wife. Besides working as a driver for a local taxi company, Crown Cab, he also ran a café with his wife. The couple, who married around six years ago, did not have any children.

Local police have termed the incident a homicide and are investigating the case.

The deceased’s cousin, Gurjant Singh, told TOI: “As per Devinder’s wife, on Friday morning he received a call from a woman at a motel for a ride. He reached the motel and was waiting for the passenger when the woman came out in a hurry. A person followed her and fired at the woman as she headed towards the cab. Devinder sustained a bullet injury and was declared dead.”






Police said the incident occurred in a parking lot in North Battleford on Friday morning.

According to reports from Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police received information about an injured man in a parking lot near the highway at around 7.45 am. When officers reached the spot, emergency medical services declared the man dead at the scene.

Authorities initially described the death as suspicious, and the RCMP’s homicide investigation unit is now probing the case. Police also said the victim’s family has been informed.
